It struck me towards the end of last year I had been so busy writing I had done very little reading. So in 2013 I am trying to put that right, I need one of those reading diaries they give you at school to spur me on. Anyway, I started by thinking about my favourite ways to read…
A book that changes your life, on a train. I am a self help book cynic, but I do love anything with psychological tendencies. Recently I’ve loved Flip It, a book passed onto me by Becky at Family Budgeting, all about flipping your thinking. I also taught myself how to meditate with booklet which came free with The Guardian. Both had a pretty instant effect on my life, whereas self help books in my mind are the ones you give up on two chapters in having gained nothing. Train journeys are brilliant for opening up the mind to new possibilities.
My kids’ books, snuggled in my bed. I normally read to the kids in their rooms at night time, but I always end up with an achy back and as a result the story gets rushed. I love reading their bedtime stories in my bed, where it is big enough for all of us to be cosy and comfortable.
An unexpected good read, in the library. I am trying to take the kids to the library more, something my mum always did a good job of with me. This year, prompted by a post I read on My Gorgeous Boy’s blog, I’m planning to choose myself a novel each time we visit too.
The weekend papers under a blanket on the sofa. My little luxury was having a paper delivered every Saturday. But the bills kept heaping up until I resented paying £50 for a pile of old newspapers, but that time with the weekend papers is priceless. Time to reinstate that, or failing that make the trip to the newsagents part of my Saturday morning ritual.
5. Magazines in the bath, or in bed. Vicky at Honest Mum told me her favourite way to de stress is with hot chocolate and a pile of magazines. Then Becky at Family Budgeting gave me a pile of magazines she had finished with last week. Perfect. Tucked up in bed on Saturday morning reading them, I realised how much gossip I had missed, everything from the fact Robbie Williams was moving house, to the ins and outs of a 2 day a week fasting diet. It gave me about a million ideas for blog posts too.
Goes without saying I should read more blogs too, I’m sorry. Another resolution for 2013.
How, or what do you loving reading?
