Is Butlins for you?

Butlins RedcoatsHave you planned anything for half term? I realised this week is the third week back since Christmas and already I hear the gentle mumblings of more organised folk in the playground talking about half term plans.

Butlins got in touch with some of their holiday offers, like breaks starting at £44 per person and ‘first child goes free’. Although I have never been to Butlins, Mr A spent many a happy Summer at Butlins Minehead as a child. With more and more holiday makers staying in the UK, many UK resorts seem to have reinvented themselves, in order to appeal to a new audience.

I’ll be honest I wasn’t sure if Butlins was for me, a good excuse then, to see what all the fuss is about. My impression is probably based on images I still hold in my head of Hi-de-Hi, but these modern hotel rooms are a far cry from that:

With holidays ranging from 2 or 3 night weekend breaks to 4 or 7 night breaks, you could dip your toe in, or take the plunge. There are hotels, apartments and rooms to choose from.

There is a surprising amount of free activity included in the holiday price. Each holiday includes Splash Waterworld with wave machines, flumes, rapids, bubble pools and toddler pools. Then there’s a funfair and live shows featuring a host of TV characters and celebrity tributes and chances to meet characters like Bob the Builder or Angelina Ballerina.

There are family activity sessions and sports sessions like tots soccer and fun fencing for 5-7 year olds. I can see the appeal of knowing that so much is inclusive and that you can keep the kids busy rain or shine.

There’s an emphasis on doing things things together as a family, with plenty to entertain the kids so that adults can relax too.  With the help of the Redcoats it is possible to enjoy any number of creative, sport and fun activities with your kids without having to find all the stuff, arguing over what to make and spending hours tidying up afterwards.  Once they are 9 children can also go to some activities on their own.

There are three Butlins: Skegness in Lincolnshire, Minehead in Somerset, and Bognor Regis in West Sussex. While you ponder which is your best bet, I’ll leave you with a tour from Chaz Smith who works there.

Have you been to Butlins?

  1. When I first moved to the UK 20+ years ago Butlins was a snigger-behind-the-hand holiday destination. Through blogs these past couple of years I’ve seen just how appealing it has actually become! My kids are all 15+ now though so I’m not sure if it’s for us anymore. Shame that we may have missed the boat on this one.
