25 years of COMIC RELIEF From Nottingham to Accra #goodwork

On the plane I listened to Jake Bugg via the in flight entertainment. British Airways describe him as a ‘working class Nottingham boy done good’. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of him. Stories of life in Nottingham, knives and drugs, places I’ve heard of, drifted past as I drifted through the clouds towards Ghana.

When we get to Ghana and meet the Comic Relief team one of them turns out to be from Nottingham too. I mention I’d listened to Jake Bugg on the plane. She tells me he benefited from a Comic Relief funded project that helps young people in Nottingham get into music. He’s won a Mercury Award too. Hmmm, I think, how did I miss this?

Then I find myself in Accra being introduced to Emmanuel, a young man who has just received a Mobile Phone Rework Station from a project Comic Relief funds. He’s really excited because it means the start of his business, of earning a living and being financially independent.

Jake Bugg comes from my home town, he’s been all over the media and I still managed to miss him. I see so many similarities in two young men benefiting from Comic Relief, thousands of miles apart. Both could tell a tale of challenging home towns too. But today all Emmanuel wanted to tell me about was this new gadget and how excited he was to get learning.

For the past 25 years the money raised through Red Nose Day has been changing the lives of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in the UK and Africa. Please share this post. Let’s Keep Up the #GoodWork.
